Cypress began in 1983 with a simple instinct: when technology leaves a gap, build the connection. Today, we design and manufacture the specialized electronics that help access-control systems communicate, adapt, and keep working.

From a South Florida startup to a Michigan-based access-control manufacturer, Cypress has kept moving toward the hard problems—the places where systems need a new way to connect.

1983
Cypress is founded
Tony Diodato and Jeff Roberts incorporated Cypress Computer Systems while working near Cypress Creek Road. From their homes, they developed hardware and software for industrial communications, security, aerospace, biomedical, robotics, and timekeeping projects.

From home offices to a front door
1988
The first Cypress office
After five years of building and testing from home, Cypress opened its first office in Deerfield Beach, Florida. The company was becoming known for quick-turn solutions to unusual facility and communication challenges.

A move closer to the work
1992
Cypress comes to Michigan
Hardware development, manufacturing, sales, and technical support moved to Metamora, Michigan—closer to the automotive customers driving much of the company’s work. The first Michigan space was the lower level of a hair salon; growth soon required a dedicated building.

1994
A new sign goes up
As the Michigan operation grew, Cypress established its next Metamora location and put its name on the North Building—a visible marker of the company’s expanding engineering and manufacturing footprint.

Built for the rollover
2000
The Y2K moment
Cypress guaranteed that its AMS alarm monitoring system was ready for the year-2000 rollover. The promise held. Soon after, the company purchased a 10,000-square-foot building in Lapeer to support the systems being built, tested, and shipped.

A sharper product focus
2002
The transition to widgets
Cypress pivoted toward smaller, high-volume integration products. Time displays, Keyboard Wedges, Suprex reader extenders, and protocol converters moved from specialty add-ons to the center of the product line.

2005
An integrator’s solutions company
With Paul Ahern leading sales and marketing, Cypress became known as an integration-accessories provider for installers. Wireless, fiber-optic, Ethernet, and twisted-pair communication solutions helped teams make incompatible systems work together.

2015
OSDP moves forward
Cypress introduced its award-winning OSDP-to-Wiegand converter—the first OSDP product on the market—and expanded its work educating the industry about secure device communication and practical OSDP adoption.

2018–21
Helping define the next protocol
Tony Diodato co-chaired the SIA Standards OSDP Technical Subcommittee as OSDP advanced toward international approval. In 2021, SIA honored his contribution with its Standards Service Award.
